Inspections of University Buildings


Each month, Environmental Health & Safety personnel conduct scheduled inspections of University facilities.  Any violations or discrepancies are noted in a Fire Safety Reminder and sent to the contact person for that area.  If no response or improvement is made in 15 days, a second notice is sent to the Department Head.  Here is a general inspection list:

Exits
Adequate number
Clearly marked
Unobstructed
Exit doors are unlocked
Exit lights are illuminated
Emergency lighting
 
Fire Protection
Check to see that fire extinguishers are adequate
Make sure fire extinguishers are unobstructed
Check inspection date on fire extinguishers
Visual check of fire sprinkler system
Visual check of fire doors
Sprinkler standpipes are unobstructed
 
Electrical Hazards
Lights, switches and outlets
Equipment cords
Outlets properly used
Electrical wiring or panels
 
General Safety
Floors clean & dry
Floors & aisles clear
Hallways & stairwells clear
Stairs & steps in good condition
Materials properly stored
Chemicals properly stored and ID'd
MSDS sheets available
Fire evacuation plan available
Emergency eye/shower wash
Cylinders properly secured
Housekeeping
Immediate areas surrounding the building
Emergency Notification Placards are up-to-date
 
General Air Quality
Good air movement from supply grilles and return registers
Air returns free of dust, mold and other visible contaminants
Absence of strong or offensive odors
Absence of irritation to eyes or mucus membranes
