Choosing the correct ladder
- Type
- Load rating
- Height
- Material (do not use aluminum near electrical sources)
Inspecting the ladder
- Rails, rungs, feet, ropes, pulleys, rung locks, spreader bars
Setting up the ladder
- Correct angle (75 degree angle - 1 foot out for every 4 feet up)
- Level ground, clear of debris
- Block / lock doors, warnings and barricades
- Overhead obstructions / electrical hazard clearance
- 3 foot (3 rung) extension above upper landings to provide safe access
- Weather / ground conditions
Climbing and Using ladders
- Belt buckle rule
- Three points of contact
- Tool belts / managing materials
- Proper footwear
- Lock spreader bar on step ladders
- Do not stand higher than the second step from the top on a step
ladder
- Do not stand on the top two rungs of extension or straight ladders
- Never sit or stand on the top cap of step ladders
