Safe Shelters

Make sure your shelter is safe

When to Seek Safe Shelter: Lightning can strike as far as 10 miles from the area where it is raining.  That's about the distance you can hear thunder.

If you can hear thunder, you are within striking distance--seek safe shelter immediately.

  • Use the 30-30 Rule:  Don't be fooled by sunshine or blue sky!
  • Safe Shelter: Buildings with closed windows and doors, and plumbing and electrical wiring, which provide grounding. Enclosed vehicles can also be used as shelter, but avoid convertibles. It is the metal shell of a vehicle that protects you--not the rubber tires. Roll up the windows and don't touch any metal.
  • Avoid Unsafe Shelters:  A small outdoor shelter or tent may shield you from rain and wind, but it will not protect you from lightning.

And remember, never seek shelter from a thunderstorm under a tree!
